Charles M. Mcgrew, Sr.

Charles Milford McGrew, Sr., 82, passed from this life on December 20, 2019, at his home in Cleveland, Oklahoma. Born on November 28, 1937, in Foraker, Oklahoma, he is the son of Calvin Monroe and Gladys (Chambers) McGrew. Charles grew up in Webb City, Barnsdall, Shidler as well as Avant, Oklahoma where he began his schooling. Later, the family moved to Okmulgee, Oklahoma, where Charlie graduated with the class of 1955. Following graduation, Charles moved to Tulsa/Sand Springs area and worked at Safeway for a short time. Charles then began doing carpentry with his brother Bob. He later met Goldie Marie Stroud on a blind date and the couple was wed on December 29, 1961, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Soon after, the couple moved to Springfield, Missouri where Charles attended Baptist Bible College. Charles was then called to Sapulpa, Jenks, then Idabel, Oklahoma assisting churches there. In 1976, the couple moved back to Cleveland, Oklahoma, starting a church with Bill Counts. The church would hold its first services in a trailer by Cleveland Hospital. Upon his retirement, Charlie and Goldie moved to Mena, Arkansas for a short time before returning to Cleveland.

Charles loved the land. He also loved doing carpentry work, preaching God’s word, and coaching the kids and grandkids. When watching the kids play baseball, Charles enjoyed popcorn and a coke. He was a longtime member and supporter of Grace Baptist Church.

Charles is survived by his four children, Charles M. McGrew, Jr of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Nathan McGrew and his wife Joann of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Israel McGrew and his wife Jennifer of Jenks, Oklahoma, and Joshua McGrew and his wife Stephanie of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two sisters in law Paula Garcia of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Alice Wilkins of Cleveland, Oklahoma; sixteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren as well as numerous other friends and relatives that will mourn his passing. In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his wife Goldie, eight siblings Betty Jo Maloney, Velma Jones, Fern Cole, Lloyd McGrew, Isaac “Ike” McGrew, Bob McGrew, Leona McGrew and an infant brother Calvin.

A visitation will be held for Charlie on Thursday, December 26, 2019, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home in Cleveland, Oklahoma. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, December 27, 2019, at 2:00 PM at the Grace Baptist Church in Cleveland, Oklahoma with Brother Bob Elfrink officiating.
