Charles Alfred Harris, 68, of Hominy, Oklahoma, passed from this life on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at his home.
Charlie was born August 13, 1949, in Hobart, Oklahoma. Charlie was the son of William David and Estelle Mae (Jackson) Harris. He was raised and received his education in Hobart. Following the completion of his school, Charlie moved to Oklahoma City for a short time before returning and gaining employment at the Oklahoma State Reformatory Work Center in Granite, Oklahoma. Charlie worked there for many years until he was transferred to Dick Conner Correctional Center in 1978. Charlie brought some of the first inmates to the facility and was initially the facilities dog handler. Charlie was united in marriage to Sammy Dee on June 15, 1980, in Hominy, Oklahoma. The couple continued to live in Hominy where they have raised their family. In 1982, Charlie transferred to the Oklahoma Correctional Industries division. He remained there until his retirement in 2009, at that time he was the superintendent.
Charles enjoyed fishing and hunting spending many days and nights with his kids doing what he loved. Charlie enjoyed watching Gold Rush and Street Outlaws on tv. Vacations were usually taken to Branson or back to Western Oklahoma to see family. However, there were typically ulterior motives of why they were going. Charlie had a big heart and is “described as one of a kind.” Of course, his favorite place to be was in the deer woods or by the river depending on the season.
Survivors are his wife Sammy of the home, four children Bill Harris of Terlton, Oklahoma, Susan Burnett and her husband Joe of Hominy, Oklahoma, C.D. Harris and his wife Amanda of Hominy, Oklahoma, Emma Harris of the home; one brother Kenneth Harris and his wife Patty of Roosevelt, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren Korben, McKinley, Madisyn, Mallerie, Adrian, Patrick, Bryce, Kallie, Michael "Boo", Malahky, Tytus, Rowdy and a host of other relatives and friends. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Wanda Conn, Katie Harris and one granddaughter Maezlinn Harris.
Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Gibson officiating. Friends may share a memory with the family online at www.chapman-black.com. Chapman-Black Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.
