Graveside services for Bettie Jane Walker were held Thursday, January 2, 2003 at the Woodland Cemetery Chapel with Rev. Jerry Abbott and Pastor Bruce Walker officiating. Interment was under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Memorial services were held Sunday, January 5, 2003 at the Central Presbyterian Church at 1660 Sherman Street in Denver, Colorado.
Bettie Jane Walker, of Denver, Colorado was born October 17, 1923, in Wichita, Kansas to Otto C. and Goldie E. (Vaughn) Hatcher. Bettie was raised and attended school in Wichita, Kansas, graduating from North High School in 1941. Upon graduation, Bettie attended Friends University in Wichita and then transferred to Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In 1946 Bettie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education.
During World War II, Bettie met David Walker who was serving in the United States Army. After serving in the Pacific Theater, David was separated from the service in 1946 and graduated from Oklahoma University in 1947. On February 9, 1947, Bettie and David were marriage in Wichita, Kansas. They had two children, Louise and Brad. Shortly after their marriage, David accepted employment with Shell Oil Company in Centralia, Illinois. In 1951, David was called back to active duty and served in Korea during the Korean War. During this time, Bettie returned to Wichita and worked for Amerda Oil Company as an administrative assistant. When David returned from active duty in the military, they were transferred to New Orleans, Louisiana. During the next several years, the couple lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sterling, Colorado, Salt Lake City, Utah and Durango, Colorado. In Durango, Bettie taught at Durango High School. In 1967 they where transferred to Denver, Colorado with Exxon Oil Company. Bettie taught at Littleton High School in Littleton, Colorado until the early 1980's. During her teaching career, Bettie taught Spanish and World History. Bettie had a passion to read, always wanting to further her education. One of her favorite authors was Thomas Wolf, but her favorite book was the Bible. She had a strong Christian faith and was an active member of the Central Presbyterian Church in Denver. Additionally, she was a member of PEO, the Delta Zeta Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and A.A.U.W.
Bettie passed away in Denver on December 28, 2002 at the age of seventy-nine. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Burden.
She is survived by her husband, David Lee Walker of the home; children, Brad Adams Walker of Denver, Colorado; Davie Louise Wehler of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; grandchildren, Lindsey Ellen Cantrell of Littleton, Colorado; Justin Robert Wehler of Fort Collins, Colorado; Amanda Jane Walker of Denver, Colorado; Richard Adams Walker of Denver, Colorado; and David Reed Walker of Denver, Colorado.
