Funeral services for Alvin Sissom long time Cleveland resident will be held Thursday, March 23, 2006 at 2:00 pm in the Western Heights Baptist Church with Rev. David Head and Dr. Gene Perry officiating. Burial will follow at the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc.
Alvin Verlis Sissom was born December 27, 1915 in Moore, Arkansas to David Walter and Vida Mae (Lunsford) Sissom. As a young boy Alvin grew up in Arkansas. When Alvin was nine years old the family moved to the Sinnett Area. The family worked for the Fleming Family as share croppers. After several years of farming they moved North of Mannford. On December 7, 1935 Alvin was united in marriage to Mildred Anna (Carter) in Cleveland, Oklahoma. Alvin and Mildred made their initial home in the Keystone area. In the early 1940Ãs, Alvin accepted employment with W.C. Norris as a welder. After working for W.C. Norris for over 3 years Alvin was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. In 1947, Alvin returned to the Keystone Area. In 1955 Alvin and Mildred purchased the Oak Grove Grocery. They continued to operate the grocery until 1958. After the sale of the grocery store, Alvin began working at Carnes Tank Cleaning. Alvin continued working for Carl Carnes for many years until his retirement in the early 1970Ãs.
After the death of Mildred in 1962, Alvin later met and was united in marriage to Floyce Lorene Ogburn at Keystone, Oklahoma on May 25, 1965. Alvin and Floyce have continued to make Cleveland their home for the past 40 plus years. After his first retirement Alvin still continued to work. At that time he began working for Carrol Huff as a welder. Alvin finally retired from an everyday job in 1977.
Alvin was a Charter Member of the Western Heights Baptist Church and the Westport Baptist Church where he also served as a Deacon. Alvin was a Sunday School Teacher for many years. His knowledge allowed him to teach others numerous things about the Bible. Alvin loved to spend time and visit ìThe Lodgeî in Colorado. Alvin loved to
work constantly on numerous projects in his shop. AlvinÃs family and friends loved his humor, fairness and a positive attitude.
Alvin went to be with his Lord and Saviour March 20, 2006, in Mannford, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years 2 months and 23 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred, four brothers George, Floyd, Armond and Eldridge Sissom, three sisters Eunice Norwood, Ruby Almy and Zora Huff.
Survived by his loving wife Floyce of the home, two sons, Granville Sissom and his wife Paula of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Kenneth Sissom and his wife Anne of Oregon, Wisconsin; one daughter Naomi Turner and her husband Leonard of Smithville, Missouri; two brothers D.W. Sissom of Mannford, Oklahoma; his twin Calvin V. Sissom of Modesto, California; two sisters, Joyce Miller of Dennison, Texas; Fern Harvison of Tulsa, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Jennette Anderson and her husband Joe of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; Karen Biggs and her husband Stephen of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; Kimarie Turner of Smithville, Missouri; Barry Turner and his wife Nancy of Camden Point, Missouri; Renee Dorman and her husband Phil of Smithville, Missouri; Stephanie Sissom of Madison, Wisconsin; Suzanne Hann of Stoughton, Wisconsin; John Nwlson and his wife Sheila of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin; eleven great grandchildren as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Western Heights Baptist Church.
