A. R. Smokey Harmon Jr.

Albert Ray Harmon better known to his friends and family as Smokey, passed away on Monday, January 10, 2011 at the age of 64 years and 24 days old. Smokey was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on December 17, 1946. He was the son of Albert Ray, Sr. and Mary Lee (Orcutt) Harmon. As a young boy Smokey was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma and later moved with his family to Oilton. He later returned to the Quay area of Tulsa where he graduated high school. Smokey later joined the United States Navy and served as a medical corpsman. He was station in the Guam/Philippine areas and also served a short time in Vietnam. In 1969, Smokey was discharged and returned to the Cleveland area. He later moved to California and then to Oklahoma City before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1977. On June 13, 1965 in Hallett, Oklahoma, Smokey was united in marriage to Sandra Kaye Conner. Smokey later accepted employment with Otis Elevator and helped with the construction and installation of the elevators in the Williams Building in downtown Tulsa. He later began working in the fabrication of oil field parts for Production Specialties. Smokey later opened his own facility Hydra Fab in the Dawson area of Tulsa before moving the operation to Cleveland in 1995. Smokey has continued working until recently due to the fact of his failing health. During the time Smokey was growing up he loved to hunt and fish. Smokey spent numerous hours playing music as well as playing chess. He also enjoyed playing on his computer especially the card game of free cell. Smokey took great pride in helping people out with problems and hot rods were his passion. He was able to manufacture and create parts for people to help get them out of a jam. However most of all in life Smokey received great pleasure in spending time with his family and visiting with friends. Survivors are his son Douglas A. Harmon and his wife Laurie of Osage, Oklahoma, one sister Sharon West of Cleveland, Oklahoma; six grandchildren Sandy Marie Harmon of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sarah and Camron Whitmire both of Osage, Oklahoma, John, Wesley, Waylon Harmon all of Osage, Oklahoma; one great grandson Jace Alan Whitmire as well as a host of other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends that will mourn his passing. Smokey was preceded in death by his father Albert Ray, Sr, mother Mary Harmon and wife Sandra Kaye on March 26, 2002. Graveside services will be held 11:00 am, Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Dixie-Bear Creek Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
